Having a dental procedure done can be a very intimidating process. At Dr. Laurence Breiterman’s office, we understand this mindset and offer many sedation options to make your visit as comfortable and relaxing as possible. Different types of sedation offer different advantages and are suitable for different dental procedures. Types of Sedation

We are equipped to provide three different types of sedation during dental procedures:

  • Local Anesthetic – The most common and basic type of anesthetic is only applied to a local area, causing numbing so little to no pain is experienced. The patient remains conscious during the procedure, but it also has the advantage of wearing off quickly so you can return to normal activity just a few hours afterward. Minor procedures or oral surgeries typically employ local anesthetic, such as having a cavity filled or minor soft tissue or tooth extraction processes. Additional technological innovations have made it even more painless and comfortable to have the anesthetic administered.
  • Nitrous Oxide – This method is commonly referred to as laughing gas. After inhaling it through a mask, you will feel more relaxed and your senses are dulled, although you do not fall completely unconscious. Slightly more advanced oral surgeries, such as having wisdom teeth removed or dental implants placed may call for nitrous oxide.
  • Oral Sedation – The exact protocol for this kind of sedation can be customized to your needs. You will be completely unconscious, having no memories of the procedure. While this may be standard for the most advanced dental procedures, oral sedation is usually only employed when the patient suffers from extreme fear or anxiety. The effects last long enough that most patients must be driven home by a friend or family member.
