4 Surprising Foods That Are Actually GOOD For Your Dental Health

During National Nutrition Month, you will likely see many articles on what the healthiest foods are for your body, like grilled chicken, vegetables and water. But you know what? Those can be boring over time. So, at Advanced Dental Techniques, Dr. Lawrence Breiterman wants to share with you four delicious foods that may surprise you with how good they are for you—and your dental health in Wayne, NJ.

  1. Dark Chocolate

Yes!!! Dark chocolate (70% cacao) is actually called a superfood for your teeth. Thanks to a compound in the chocolate called CBH, eating dark chocolate can help harden your tooth enamel. The stronger your enamel, the more resistant your teeth are to cavities. Now, this doesn’t mean you can eat just chocolate and avoid taking care of your teeth (you will get cavities that way), but a small piece with meals, followed by brushing and flossing is actually great for your dental health!

  1. Cheese

Another superfood for the teeth, cheese is effective at removing acids in your mouth that are caused by the other foods and drinks you consume. Eating portions of cheese after your meals can help counteract the acids left over from your meal. We recommend eating sheep or goat cheese primarily as it is overall healthier for you and your digestive system.

  1. Oranges

You may or may not be surprised by this one. While oranges are healthy for your body, their citric acid has been known to cause damage to teeth. However, the vitamin C found in oranges strengthen blood vessels and connective tissue in your gums. This helps prevent or slow down gum disease! Just consider eating some cheese after you have an orange, then follow it up with brushing and your teeth will be healthy!

  1. Wild Salmon

Wild salmon are a great source of vitamin D, which can help your body absorb excess calcium. Your body has a limit to the amount of calcium it can consume, so by absorbing the excess, your teeth and gums can receive maximum benefits to fight off disease. Not a fish fan? Vitamin D supplements work just as well!

If you’re anything like us, you are probably already reaching for that little bit of chocolate right now! If you would like more information on foods that are tasty and good for your dental health, our Wayne, NJ office is open to scheduling consultations with Dr. Breiterman today!
